JP Soars hit Rochester like a warm front running into a Canadian high…and that’s enough about that.

JP Soars is a very exciting performer in may ways. His guitar style is a superb blend of of classic blues (T-Bone Walker, Guitar Slim) with a pinch of metal (Slash, Slayer) and surf (Dick Dale, Ventures). His vocals are gritty and heartfelt and his phrasing hits it right on the head.

He stopped by at Dinosaur BBQ (where the music is always free) last week to bring a taste of South Florida Blues deluxe to the Northern states. Doing some remarkable T-Bone Walker styled work on “The Hustle (Is On)” JP showed his classic blues chops and soon had the attention of everyone in the bar. Working his way thru more classic blues numbers before giving the crowd a taste of his version of the blues for today’s audience. A great take on an old feel is his “So Many Times” where he strips it down and puts it all back together in a new form (at this point we had several people screaming and encouraging him to “go ahead with your bad self”. And he did just that, busting out a dark and foreboding version of “Gypsy Woman” before heading to the west coast for some shredder surf music via the eastern shore of Florida. The Dick Dale & The Ventures tribute was wild, unbridled and totally groovy all we needed were some mini-skirts and go-go dancers to complete the scene. But just in case we needed one more shot of cool juice, JP and the band break out into the theme from ‘Sanford & Son’

Quickly back to the blues, “K.Y.N.O.M.B.” which features the great line “…don’t let your mouth write a check, that your ass can’t afford” HAH JP told me a cool little story that I will share with ya’s about this number. The great Johnny Winter heard this and assumed that JP was a African American blues cat – and they were playing a festival together and one of Johnny’s band members approached JP about this and told him Johnny’s thoughts and said he should go back and say hi to Johnny and tell him who he is… He was shy at first, after all it is Johnny Winter, but was convinced and met him and they had a great time talking about the song and Johnny loves it and hopefully he will cover it in the future. Now that’s cool beans!

To end the set JP broke out his 2 string diddley bow, featuring a black sharpie as neck bridge/capo and wowed the folks with some down and dirty work with a sweet glass slide that conjured up images of a brawl in hell over the soul of an artist.

Great stuff indeed, if ya get a chance to see JP Soars and the Red Hots don’t hesitate, this cat is fun, talented and part of a great group of solid young performers that will keep the blues alive and thriving!
