A Baker's Dozen Of Blues

A Baker’s Dozen Of Blues

The Blues Music Awards are almost here.  Starting Wednesday (and before) the Blues Framily will gather in Memphis, Tennessee to celebrate the best and brightest in our community. Once a year this event brings us all together to share, catch-up and meet each other in an open atmosphere. Nothing else quite like it for me.
Be sure to check our facebook page (Blues411 and/or my personal page for updates) they will not be broadcast this year (sigh) but will be recorded for use at another time. that’s all I gots to say about that…

This week we have a former BMA nominee, Jim Suhler, and his ‘Panther Burn ‘ release at the #1 spot. A great mix of ‘Texasissippi’ music that catches that elusive feel that so many folks try to achieve. Congrats Jim, – we first met at the BMA’s several years ago when he was nominated, at the Marriott bar & social club, Jim was there with keyboard player and facebook star, Shawn Phares, ever since then we been friends and I am honored to know him.

New to the Baker’s Dozen chart is Jarekus Singleton and his band. This young man is gonna make heads turn and rapidly rise up the ranks of blues artists. His music is original, heartfelt and real deal blues. I have big love for this cat, and I am amazed at the level his music is at, and how high his ceiling is.

Our Amuse Bouche is a fun one. It’s the Blues Roots of rock songs..many we may already know – but others we might not.
So we take the original (as I define it – disclaimer for y’all who book knowledge to the max) play it then add a popular version or two afterwards. It is fun, a learning experience and just damn good music.

MojoWax Radio

We are already in Memphis, or at least on the way….we will be visiting with the Stax Music Academy folks for some deep time, and then it will be ‘party on Beale’. Wish you could join us, wish y’all could listen like ya have over the years, but remember we are on MojoWax Radio . . . just sayin’.

A Baker’s Dozen of Blues: April 28, 2014

A Baker's Dozen Of Blues

A Baker’s Dozen Of Blues

Weddings are always a great time. And so it was just that this weekend in beautiful Point Pleasant, NJ (tho’ it was a tad chilly for our Southern Blood). My nephew Phillip married Nora, and threw one helluva party. Much dancing, drinking, and a surprise Friday night jam at the home of  Tommie Gannon, a guitar playing, harp busting cat who allowed me to channel Otis Redding via Mick Jagger for some R&B styled blues sangin’.

So on to the final Baker’s Dozen chart for the first quarter of 2014.
I could not be happier to announce that The 24th Street Wailers are at the top! I have followed this band since my first encounter with them at the IBC several years ago. They are dynamic, talented and worthy of the spot and your support. So check them out.

We have some exciting additions to the Baker’s Dozen – Joe Louis Walker,   and the dynamic duo of Jonn Del Toro Richardson and Sean Carney – who are both getting airplay right now. Making their Chef Suggestion debut is a young man who will be packing in the crowds wherever he goes and is an amazing talent and humble young man, Jarekus Singleton. His debut release for Alligator Records, Refuse to Lose,  will be out shortly but you can order it thru Amazon now.
It does not end there, we have Tweed Funk, Eden Brent Cathy Lemons  all set and ready to start to climb onto the play list soon.

As mentioned earlier, we just got back from NJ, and are off to Memphis for the best blues blast ever, The Blues Music Awards!
It won’t be aired live this year, but it will be recorded and broadcast at a later date by SiriusXM’s Bluesville station. There may be shout outs live from the floor so stayed tuned to our page for details.
So to celebrate we will feature artists who are nominated for certain categories and give you a true sampler platter of the fine blues they give us. That’s our Amuse Bouche section for the week.

A Baker’s Dozen of Blues: March 3, 2014

A Baker's Dozen Of Blues

A Baker’s Dozen Of Blues

March is upon us, let’s hope that overall the weather treats us a little bit better than it has so far this year.
Lots has been happening, the voting deadline for the Blues Music Awards has come and gone, now it’s time to tally ‘em up – and then convene in Memphis in May for the celebration and coronation of the winners. As we all know everyone who got a nomination is a winner, and if we gonna have a contest and votes someone gotta take home something!
Speaking of taking home the ‘bacon’ this week we got us Chicago Home-boy Tom Holland & The Shuffle Kings, with their release “No Fluff, Just the Stuff” at the #1 spot. Congrats Tom, well deserved.

We also have some new additions to the ‘big chart’  one is an outstanding vocalist and lady Ms. Shaun Murphy, the other is a very cool cat who has the ‘down-low’ wrapped up tight and outta sight, Mudcat!

Our Amuse Bouche features the song ‘All Your Love’ this week. Inspired by Scott Muni from NYC Radio back in the day, and more currently by Bill Wax and his ‘wash cycle’ we are featuring our pu-pu platter of ‘All Your Love’ with versions by 8 artists, hope ya enjoy it. If not we will only run this type of thing once a month so…

One extra special spot is Michissippi  Mick Kolassa and his new release, all proceeds go to the HART Fund and Generation Blues – so give it a listen and buy it and do the right thing. You can find out more about these parts of the Blues Foundation at the above link to their site.

A Baker’s Dozen Of Blues: February 24, 2014

A Baker's Dozen Of Blues

A Baker’s Dozen Of Blues

As we close out February, just a little reminder that it’s getting close to the end to join the Blues Foundation and cast your vote for the Nominees for the Blues Music Awards.  Yes, your vote does matter, it has equal weight and pull as anyone’s and you CAN make a difference.

Coming off a week of firsts, we have another – Annie Mack’s release ‘Baptized in the Blues’ has claimed the #1 spot. With Bobby Murray hanging on to it for two weeks straight there was considerable rumblings that she would peak at #2 and then give way.  Not this girl!!!  Congratulations.

Debuting on the Baker’s Dozen play chart is Niecie, and Michael Packer,  about as different as you can get. But all good and all blues people. Be sure to checkout who just got listed on the Chef Suggestion portion of our menu, yes indeed!

Our Amuse Bouche section is once again a tribute tot he artists we saw and enjoyed in Memphis. Some of them competed, one won, others just added value to the whole thing. I urge you to check these folks out and buy some music from them.

One extra special spot is Michissippi  Mick Kolassa and his new release, all proceeds go to the HART Fund and Generation Blues – so give it a listen and buy it and do the right thing. You can find out more about these parts of the Blues Foundation at the above link to their site.
