There is nothing to fear from foreign investment in Bangladesh ports as the government is determined to serve the interests of the country first before accepting any new investment, the Minister of State for navigation, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury.

“We need foreign investment. We are looking at a lot of trade deals right now. We have to deal with all of that. But if a country comes with investment, the government will serve Bangladesh’s interests first.”

The Minister of State made the comments during a panel discussion on “How the port of Chattogram can be transformed into a regional shipping hub”, organized by the English daily newspaper The Business Standard (TBS) at its offices in Dhaka. .

Bangladesh is located in the middle of East and West, he said.

The deep-water port of Matarbari has already become a regional hub and Cox’s Bazar Airport will also follow, Chowdhury said.

“We have three inland ports. There are some weaknesses in terms of logistics. We are trying to phase it out. It takes a lot of development for that. That’s why we are talking about accepting foreign investment.”
